A BOOK REVIEW: PTSD A new science of how to heal PTSD

Hi there it’s David start Touch and Today I’m going To talk to you about How you can Heal Your own ptsd and one of the most important Books that i’ve ever Read as a Clinical Therapist a Life Coach and a trauma specialist i Recommend this book more Than anything else so this is gonna be a book review and I’m gonna tell you why you should Pick this book up today There will Be Links posted in Amazon But we’re gonna get to all of That coming Up next welcome back This is this is the foundational This is one of The first videos were posted on survivor hero it’s one of the foundational videos as This book Poster What Doesn’t Kill us the new Psychology of post-traumatic Growth Is one of The most important Books i’ve ever encountered So i’m going to share to do share with You today Just a Brief book Overview It’s written By dr. Stephan Joseph Phd he is a I’ve Been Working in post-traumatic Growth for almost Two Years or 20 Years i had Decades Now two Decades there we Go and I this book is Very Very instant easy Read i had a Friend once Asked me if you could have recommend one book to read a post-traumatic Growth What Would it be and this Was the book so i Am Actually Doing My research on post-traumatic Growth a My dissertation i have Been Working With? Survivor hero i developed a Seven-Week program and took to help My clients and i’ve Been using post-traumatic Growth for about Seven Years and I Just no Idea There Was actually a science because i found something That Worked Better Than Therapy and Then That’s Why one Thing i loved about coaching and then When i entered my phd i started Doing research on this new PSychology? Actually Kind of Stumbled across It and My Mind was Blown There Was Actually science studies and a Whole Field about This and it’s Been Going on since 1985 That’s When the first Instruments were standardized This research has Been going on and most Therapists don’t know about it So That’S so important of Why you Should Read this book so let’s start with probably the most The Part you’re Really interested in and That’s how to heal so this book is first gonna go over it we’ll Go over What post-traumatic Growth is he he writes in prose it’s a Beautiful story and it’s true he was actually One of the Researchers Who Was examining This incident with Boat There’s all This trauma and They followed the survivors So in the postscript this is the third Section of the book They talk about the thrive model and these are six Signposts To facilitate both post-traumatic Growth but i want To really cover the three Messages stephan Joseph Says Because i think They are most Important and What most People Who are Dealing with trauma really Need to hear especially going Through This process so number one Message Number One you are not alone page 172 iF you’re Wondering it You’re Just Not alone and That’s the most important Thing i’m gonna Let His Words Speak for Himself and Number two message Number two is the trauma is a Normal and Natural process i know a Lot of People don’t want. To Hear That? It is though and trauma Is a Part of Existence But some of us encounter trauma and don’t have a coping Mechanisms at The time and our Bodies struggle to get rid of It and The Third message is Growth Is a Journey and From My own Healing of ptsd and Through This It’s is a Journey so i can i can testament to that but i can also tell you it Goes It Heals Faster Than you think There’s a Few There’s some Things you can do to speed it up now i’m gonna also Read Appendix One Which is common problems associated With post traumatic stress so one of the common questions i get as a Crisis counselor Clinical Therapist and Whatnot is well Actually It’s often statements that They Have ptSd And/or Do I have ptsd or What Does It Mean to have ptsd can you Heal from ptsd and before With My Clinical training We Really We Talked about resilience and avoiding trauma But We Never Actually Talked about how People Heal from it So this book is great on That But Let’s Let’s first Take some of The Mental stigma out of This so i have had ptsd i They had Because it’s basically It i’ve Healed it it’S no longer a disorder that Dramatically Disrupts My Life It Still Just Lost My life From time to time It impacts me and will even any partner i’m with it Will You Know That’s something They’re gonna Need to know and be aware of and there’s another book i’m gonna talk about i do a book Review on Called Post-traumatic stress to See source book and this is the book for family members and trauma Survivors Which again i’ll get in another video we’ll Have Links Below Now i’m Just gonna Go through The symptoms and Say Yes or no if i’m still Dealing with this Because i’m a i Consider Myself a Highly Functional person and Someone Who Does Really Well Most People Have no idea at ptsd or severe Anxiety Because They’ve Learned How to manage in these various tools so let me Just go down this list and Let me do it i’m gonna do It Anyway and I Just Ask Yourself if you have this yes/no and Know that Just Kind of Keep in Mind What i still have and? How simple it can Be if we Just Get a Rid of Few of These how dramatically Your life can improve all right so The first is intrusive memories so intrusive Thoughts Images Feelings Stuff That Just Kind of Invades your consciousness The Next yes i still have some of those not too often but occasionally They come out of the blue Vivid Dreams And Nightmares Unfortunately I Still deal With This From time to time Depending on My stress Level Now the more stress i am the lower my inhibitions and Lower My Resources the more often that happens Flashbacks Traumatized People Often Experience Flashbacks Where They relive the event That’s very difficult for some People don’t Have ptsd to Understand Because you’re Basically two Places at Once You’re reliving the trauma in the past as if It happens right Now Your body is responding if it’s happening Now so when i would have ptsd Flashbacks i’m trying To have a Conversation With Someone But meanwhile Thoughts Feelings Images Sounds all of That’s Rushing in and i’m trying to pay Attention to Conversation but I’m not there and i’m like Checked Out back and forth back and forth and It took a long Time For me to work on that so That’s something Therapeutic Helped with uh something coaching can do? Hang Out with but this book also can Help With That And Alright so the Next One is it’s Pretty Short Hyper-vigilance Where you’re always a Hyper aware of everything That’s going on Around you and I still have that i’ve Learned to take It and use it as a positive Now i increased Startled response This this Depending Is i still have This sometimes but it’s not too often thank Goodness it’s really disruptive like the slightest Thing Makes You Jump and When you’re triggered or scared It happens more Frequently After a trauma Happens There’s This process and i’m gonna we’re gonna get to a little bit after that so different is this Then we’ve Gotten in Mental avoidance Where you avoid thinking about Things that can Be Related and I know i did this and It Was Very disruptive to my life i was Just avoiding processing Stuff Didn’T Even want to think anything remotely Related I still don’t Go to scary Movies today i have enough trauma and Deal with enough trauma in my life i don’t need to see Fake trauma i’m a Low trauma diet and Then we’ve Got Behavioural avoidance Where you avoid Certain Things It Could cause It cause You to feel distressed Reminders Things Such As Basically Bring Up Thoughts Feelings Conversations You tend to avoid those and avoid Certain People That do those and cut People off and are out of Your life Now emotional Numbness This offens Following a trauma it’s really common Where you would Draw and you often Feel Socially Numb Unable to Express Various emotions That’s Part of Grief of What you’re going Through You Know When it lasts Longer The emotional Numbness That’s where some dissociation is still happening after the fact and Again The Therapy is Very Helpful for that and there’s Various Grounding Techniques you can do Which i’m sure we’re gonna Get Through Many Times in This other videos Because This is Just the tip of the iceberg but Another Reason Why you Should Read this book Anxiety and Well okay I’m Just gonna Link This together social WiThdrawal Where People often wiThdraw from society and Just avoid Things i still do this When I’m stressed or overwhelmed i Just Kind of Stay in My Sanctuary i have? Next One Anxiety a Lot of Anxiety and sometimes it’S difficult for me to be in crowds and That’s a Social With Drawn Anxiety Combined i Go to movies often When They’re less Crowded I can Handle a Crowd but i enjoy Things When there’s less and That’s Just something that Is A part of My ptsd you can Round it off To introvert That’s Kind of How i often Will Explain It but i’m a Very social introvert it’s Just Very Loud Chaotic Things That’s What They Would Draw Sleep disturbances difficulty Falling Asleep or staying Asleep i Unfortunately Still deal With This Again the more stressed out again in my current Job Where my Sleep Schedule is all Over the place that happens But This is really common with a Lot of Survivors waking Up hour and a Half Two Hours to get a Rem Cycle and you Wake Up or three hours and for me it’s often Way the nightmare or something like? That shame often a Lot of People Feel guilt and shame after a trauma as if it’s their Fault Which is really tragic Because it’s not but we often Internalize What do we do to caused it What could we Have done avoid It and we Feel Guilty and That’s the next one guilt Having Feelings of Guilt That we were somehow connected or responsible and It’s you know when you Say What was she wearing to have that trauma That’s That’s not helping this? Situation That’s adding more Guilt for something That Was not her fault And Then we’ve Got Sadness Just General Sadness these are Feelings often People struggle to deal with and That’s Overwhelming and Just Kind of It’s a Just a genuine Sadness that Comes in Waves It comes in oops Sorry It comes in i talk with my Hands a Lot so a Dynamic microphone in my face is always an interesting Experience and It comes in Waves and Goes And In fact we’re Just gonna tilt that up a little bit there so you should Be Able to hear me it’s Just gonna Slightly change Alright and Then Where we Debrief Where you’re often grieving and if There’s a Loss That’s more common Where this happens a traumatic loss Irritability Survivors often Feel Very irritable and Frustrated This is i i can Have This during Certain Days if i haven’t had My caffeine and totally Yeah Iczer You You’ll know if you got that or not so yes or no it’s not. Too disruptive but I’ve Got It anger Anger about the traumatic event especially if They believe it’S some sort of injustice occurred that is really Common But don’t really have that i Think my Many Years of Yoga and Meditation Helped me with that i used to have a Lot of Anger I’m am Still have some Anger But Not It doesn’t it’s not disruptive and i don’t take It out on People so Therefore it’s not as much of a problem and Then we’ve Got Physical problems These Body Sensations Where the body Stores The trauma so the Mind Forgets the body remembers and That’s One of The common Challenges with ptsd is iF You don’t process it It gets Stored so a lot of People Will Say In when i’m working in the er then They’re They’ve Got to ptsd because something Happened last night and The Truth Is they probably have acute stress disorder Not ptsd and there’s a Big difference iF something traumatic happens to you it doesn’t Mean you’re going to get ptsd you might Have some ptsd like Symptoms Later Down The Road Remembering Is you’re still Processing and Healing Because That’s a Part of Your Story Now and it’s not Always a Great Part but it it’s something that you have? To integrate and Learn and and Grow With or Grow despite of and That’s Part of Your hero Story so When People Will Say They have a Treatment They’ve Got ptSd and event Just Happened it’s an acute stress Response an acute stress response is Basically People to ptsd symptoms Where the body is That you’re is Feeling all of This Stuff the Mind is overwhelmed and if you have a Chance to this is where? Psychological first aid Comes in we’re seeing a Crisis counselor like me or various about Therapy a trauma therapist is Very Helpful Because they can Help You process these Feelings and Just Get them Out Now once you’ve done that don’t Feel you need to keep digging in It’s Just givers You give Your chance to settle your nervous system a Chance to settle a Lot of Times it Just needs to be processed and talked about in a Safe Place and then You can Kind of decompress Know that you’re Loved and Supported Warm Blanket Water You Know your basic Needs met While you’re doing this and that Helps Reduce acute distress and ptsd often ever Forms There’s Even a pill though That can Just Then erase some of Those Memories if you take It right Away Sorry Allergies and There’s a Lot of Controversy Because These vents Change Us and Make us Excuse me one moment and i’m gonna do a Review of This love Rate Beverage It’s called Bing and it’s a caffeinated Energy Drink B Vitamins With Low Sugar and As someone ptsd and calf you got to be careful caffeine B vitamins give You the Energy but regulating The caffeine can Reduce These some of The Anxiety okay um now that the frogs outta my Throat That’s That’s the Basics of What the ptsd and acute stress response now to the part that you’re really waiting. To hear and there’s six Steps? Stephan Joseph Talks about The Thrive Model Now This Is a Model to actually Help You is a Self-Help Book in that Regard that It Helps you Heal your life this is Very Similar to To my own survivor to hero Model that i developed mine Was a Seven Step Because i Just Took an Extra Week to integrate and Kind of Plan Life a Little Bit So i’m gonna go over the six steps So you know What They are and you can Decide Whether You want to buy this book but i Highly Recommend it Okay Signpost One the six Signposts of The Thrive Model Is you’re gonna be taking stock and That’s Just taking an Inventory of Your life To harvesting hope and Finding hope Within Yourself and We use on grace hope and strength Channel we’re going to be providing inspiration and guidance on that so when you’re striving Struggles Because That happens these Ups and downs AnyWay i’ve Seen Doubts i the grace hope strength Channel Will inspire you now Breakups They’re One of The most Triggering Things and relationships are a Key Part of Your hero story and growing with a drama or even past a drama so i Talk a Lot about relationships and Even Money Because It’s very Your Whole life is affected by This and that is the part of This Rebuilding process Reauthorize Really What This survivor to hero Tv Channel and Grace hope strength are gonna be about Now my third Channel star Touch Talks tech it’S more about technology Stuff but some tech They can Support Your life if there is that technology i will recommend It also in Either grace hope strength or The Survivor to hero Channel Depending on the context? Again the Grace hope strength is going to be an inspirational Channel and Just extra a Little less Psychology a Little more Touchy-Feely Heart Action Oriented Wellness Health Beauty Fashion exercise Movement Dance Just Things Like Spiritualities to get Big part and it’s multidisciplinary so I’m my faith is Christian but also how buddhism and because i’m also by fall a Lot of contemplative Will Talk with talk Indian Yeah iF you’re into yoga as Well as Yeah Even The shamanism Stuff I’M gonna Bring some Great Healers and Shamanism is about soul retrieval often Where the ideas through a trauma Part of us our souls Get Damaged and They Help you Heal and Repair That It used to be in native cultures it’S a little site site no here but in indigenous cultures Shamans sometimes were Touched By trauma and Then That’s how they Saw It as being chosen and They become That that When you’re When a trauma happens in your life like a Switch Turns on and That Is a Compassion switch or you can See others who are going Through That The same trauma in your Heart Goes Out to them and you Feel and You resonating You develop a Deeper sense of Empathy Sorry See if This give This that oh wait Just a tiny Bit more You develop a Deep sense of Empathy and So they Would train and Work with as a medicine Woman or medicine man and to be able to guide and Help Builders When Tough Things Would Happen so it was cut more of being Chosen Now the fourth signpost is identifying change it Helps some of That’S difficult to see the change and see the Opportunities and the Survivor to hero Tv and thread wrote Philosophy are gonna Try to help You identify Opportunities for Change to grow as Well as Help You choose some of Your own and That’s a Lot of What the inspiration Channel Grace hope strength is about is Inspiring You to create change in your life but in sepang this revenue Here tV we’re also going to be Focusing on the What the how and the structure Great Again Experts Is we’re Really going to be Bringing in and People Who have Lots of Other life Experience as Well as Health Wellness Advice on the other Channels Signpost five Valuing Change Because sometimes we don’t value It Because change can Suck sometimes and Then we’ve Got Expressing Change in action That’s a Sixth Signpost so taking action Is one of The most important Things and this book Guides You Through It through a Gentle Way i think stephin Joseph’ Is a Very He’s a he’s a Beautiful writer He’s very eloquent i think he’s british and?
