Andy Warhol’s 25 Cats

Andy Warhol’s 25 Cats

Andy Warhol loved cats like the rest of us. Years before he was famous, Warhol created
an art book called 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy. That’s right – 25 Cats Name Sam and One
Blue Pussy. The typo was left in the title. In the early 1950s, Warhol was struggling
as a freelance illustrator. His mom, Julia, came to New York to help. Their apartment was full of cats. Warhol’s collection of felines started with
a cat called Hester but soon grew to a colony of 25 cats. In 1954, Andy and Julia self published 25
Cats Name Sam, which is filled with hand colored lithographs. There are actually only 16 cats called Sam
in the book. Warhol and his mother went on to publish a
second cat book, called Holy Cats. And that’s how one of art’s great names
got his start… cat pictures.
