County Talk: Libraries: Part 2 of 3

County Talk: Libraries: Part 2 of 3

welcome back to County talk today we’re
talking about library services here in Sarasota County so let’s go down to
northport we’re on sep tember 29 ground was broken on exciting collaborative
library project it’s a great project that’s come together the suncoast
technical college and the Shannon Straub Public Library we’re fortunate to have
the collaboration of the Sarasota County School Board sarasota county and the
city of north court Shannon was my predecessor my mentor and also a friend
she’s given so much to this community she was all about collaboration
subsequent to her leaving office she continued on her service with our
Library Foundation she has a passion for our children and for reading and this
was just an appropriate way to honor her public service in her community service
well every time we opened a new library more and more people have access to the
things they depend on in addition to the collections that our print + digital
people come to the library for social interaction they come for learning
experiences and that’s what this library will be about a lot of what we do in
government whether it be local regional or state is build community and I think
today’s event demonstrates what happens when that community of governments that
community of people get together with a common cause and a common purpose in the
models of joint use libraries that we’ve seen the collaboration in rich’s the
experience of the library user it will increase the quality of life and it will
train the workforce that’s here in northport our workforce is here and it
will help us to market northport as the economic development center of the
region I’m excited because number one it’s a great asset for the commune
this part of our county is long needed something like this and I’m also excited
because it will be a visible a tangible example of entities government’s working
together with a common project to the average citizen when they walk in they
will look at it as a service at a County project or a Sarasota County School
Board project to look at as their community Technical College and the
community library Sarasota County director of libraries and historical
resources Sarabeth collation is back with us also joining us is dr. Todd boat
the director of suncoast Technical College and Rob Lewis sarasota counties
director of intergovernmental affairs thank you all for being here today it’s
much appreciated so Sarah Beth from what I understand this is a first of its kind
project down in northport so tell us a little bit about about what that is
thanks drew we had looked for opportunities to partner with the school
system for quite some time and when you think about the shared audience of
students and the general community this was a great opportunity so when we have
that library open in northport will be part of the campus life serving the
students and then the general population of northport well dr. Bohdan we heard in
that that video segment that there’s going to be some exciting programs
they’re going to be offered down there tell us a little bit more about about
what students can expect when they attend act I campus absolutely there’s
going to be a balance of programs between some of the things we currently
offer on our main campus will have culinary arts nursing and our business
education programs but then in addition to that we’re going to have some things
they’re going to be unique to the industry that surrounds that campus so
we’ll have a carpentry program with a specific slant towards cabinetmaking
because there are several shops right within walking distance of that campus
the other program that’s unique is industrial maintenance and so industrial
maintenance is a really a cross trade program a little bit of hydraulics a
little bit electricity a little bit of welding what you would need to keep a
manufacturing operation up and running and that’s as a result of our
partnership with manufacturers we have a machining program at our main campus and
we went to them and said where do we go next and they led us to a
industrial maintenance program so it sounds like a lot of unique
opportunities than on the northport campus absolutely absolutely Rob
obviously a project like this doesn’t happen without without some
collaboration so what is that process like when with different agencies and
governments come together to work for something positive like this true I
think it’s a really important point of our project that we’re talking about
today in Sarabeth and dr. Boden have certainly set that example for all of us
but really when it comes down to it it’s about building community and I think
that what we see in what’s coming up out of the ground now is a collaborative
product between the school board sarasota county the state legislature
the Friends of the library the city of Northport has been extraordinarily
supportive of all these efforts as well and so you have an example of everyone
coming together for a common purpose the state legislature played a critical role
at a critical time in terms of providing funding and so I think the outcome of
that’s going to be a wonderful community asset and I think it’s a great building
block in our building of the community a success for a project like this doesn’t
happen in a vacuum ave certainly now as far as the campus itself what are some
other amenities that the folks can look forward to both the students and as
library patrons down there well you know we talk a lot about the partnership so
there’s lots of spaces that will be shared so we talked about the library
you know we talked about the technical college there also be a conference
center there the conference center is a result of the city of northport saying
you know there’s just not enough meeting space and so we’ll have a conference
center there that can be subdivided into three smaller spaces or one large space
for up to three hundred people will also have an operation similar to what we
have on our main campus that we refer to as the bistro which will have the
opportunity to go in and work with our students we try to replicate a
restaurant so they’ll be what we call the Bistro 502 that will be open there
on tuesdays wednesdays and thursday so you get some unique culinary treats as a
product of our students so it really sounds more like a community center as
as opposed to just a school or just a library there are going to be added
about added values we said from the very beginning that this is going to be more
than the sum of the parts there’s going to be synergy
I would point out that the Friends of the the northport library there which
has recently been named the Shannon stub public library will operate a used
bookstore much like the other friends do and that will be in the same space that
dr. Boden has a student bookstore where they can purchase the uniforms and other
resources well obviously we just had the groundbreaking so you know we’re moving
through the the construction process now I’m sure what folks really want to know
is when is it going to be open when we’re going to have that exciting ribbon
cutting and when is going to be ready for the public well that pressure really
gets turned up when the school board makes a decision as to what the 2017-18
school calendar looks like we are going to have high school students on that
campus they’ll be taking courses on a dual enrolled basis and that will really
set the deadline for having the school open so that will be in the fall more
specifically August of 2017 Wow I’m sure it’s something that the entire community
is going to be tracking and we’re all looking forward to so so thanks for
sharing with that information with the today’s really appreciate it up next
we’ll be joined by a couple of our library staff members to talk about the
many many services available to library patrons including some you don’t even
have to leave your home to take advantage of we’ll be right back
