The Skeptic in the Room

The Skeptic in the Room

I’m always amazed that some people believe things that defy common sense How do they accept the bizarre and the odd for which there is no evidence Sure, some people say that it’s harmless And I wish I could just let it go But it’s not what we know that makes trouble It’s what we know – that just isn’t so It’s always such a drag to be the skeptic in the room I state my case and watch the room grow silent as a tomb ‘Cause I’m the one who always says “How’s that supposed to work?” Which makes me end up sounding like an overbearing jerk Yes, it’s a drag to always be the lonely skeptic in the room I have to speak my mind when pseudo-science starts to bloom Although I try to hold my tongue, I just can’t make it quit ‘Cause people sure believe some crazy shit! I have a friend, her name is Laura,
loves to talk about her aura Every time she’s off her game
her dented aura is to blame She says everybody’s got ’em,
cameras have been known to spot ’em Magic, mystic aural energy One day I just had to ask her: Laura, make it clear How’s it all supposed to work? Please tell me – I’m all ears! How’s an aura get created?
Tell me how’s it’s generated? Is there a hypothesis
for how an aura can exist? Maybe you’re just having mood swings,
which you blame on magic woo things That’s the last time Laura talked to me! It’s always such a drag to be the skeptic in the room I state my case and watch the room grow silent as a tomb ‘Cause I’m the one who always says “How’s that supposed to work?” Which makes me end up sounding like an overbearing jerk Yes, it’s a drag to always be the lonely skeptic in the room I have to speak my mind when pseudo-science starts to bloom Although I try to hold my tongue, I just can’t make it quit ‘Cause people sure believe some crazy shit! My friend Dennis he’s a scholar;
his tech skills earn him top dollar Just a few short years ago,
Dennis saw a UFO! Now he says they’re all around us;
Aliens in fact surround us Probably they’re living right next door! I say “Dennis, tell me buddy, help me understand…” How can there be flying saucers, buzzing ’round the land?” How come every single sighting
seems to come in lousy lighting I could sure accept the truth,
with valid photographic proof When you saw those lights a blinking
had you maybe just been drinking? Dennis doesn’t call me anymore! It’s always such a drag to be the skeptic in the room I state my case and watch the room grow silent as a tomb ‘Cause I’m the one who always says “How’s that supposed to work?” Which makes me end up sounding like an overbearing jerk Yes, it’s a drag to always be the lonely skeptic in the room I have to speak my mind when pseudo-science starts to bloom Although I try to hold my tongue, I just can’t make it quit ‘Cause people sure believe some crazy shit! Britney – she’s a modern lady,
rather green and quite new-agey Claims her latest malady
was cured by homeopathy! She says it has magic rules,
just take some wholesome molecules dissolve them in the purest H₂O! Britney took this grand concoction, and her pain was fixed “Come again,” I had to say, “just what was in that mix?” If it works well what would then be –
water has selective mem’ry? Knows the good but not the shit,
that ever was dissolved in it. Thanks to science here’s what we know,
really it’s a big placebo Britney told me just where I can go. It’s always such a drag to be the skeptic in the room I state my case and watch the room grow silent as a tomb ‘Cause I’m the one who always says “How’s that supposed to work?” Which makes me end up sounding like an overbearing jerk Yes, it’s a drag to always be the lonely skeptic in the room I have to speak my mind when pseudo-science starts to bloom Although I try to hold my tongue, I just can’t make it quit ‘Cause people sure believe some crazy shit I have a friend, no “Doubting Thomas”,
quite devout and really honest Says despite what we’ve been told,
the Earth is really not that old. He will brook no whys or wherefores,
that’s what holy books are there for Earth was born six thousand years ago To contradict you, Thomas, I admit to feeling grief But maybe there’s some evidence to counter your belief! Like chemistry, biology,
astronomy, anatomy, astrophysics, botany,
geology, zoology, molecular biology,
physics, physiology Thomas says “So what? They’ll burn in Hell!” It’s always such a drag to be the skeptic in the room I state my case and watch the room grow silent as a tomb ‘Cause I’m the one who always says “How’s that supposed to work?” Which makes me end up sounding like an overbearing jerk Yes, it’s a drag to always be the lonely skeptic in the room I have to speak my mind when pseudo-science starts to bloom Although I try to hold my tongue, I just can’t make it quit ‘Cause people sure believe some scary shit! My young neighbors Dave and Tina,
talked about how they had seen a former Playboy pinup queen,
speaking out against vaccines Now they think its realistic –
so that no one grows autistic Not to vaccinate their little kids Dave, please listen now before it really is too late Don’t take health advice from one to whom you used to masturbate Beauty queens have certain assets;
science really ain’t their strong set you should get a good assist
from a working scientist Guys, I won’t speak gingerly
’cause this could cause great injury The right thing is what Dave and Tina did! So, it’s not always such a drag to be the skeptic in the room Sometimes I state my case and find that people will consume Though I’m the one who always says “How’s that supposed to work?” It doesn’t have to mean that I’m an overbearing jerk No, it’s not bad to always be the lonely skeptic in the room But I’ll still speak my mind when pseudo-science starts to bloom Although I try to hold my tongue, I know I’ll never quit Cause people do believe And man do they believe Yes, people do believe some crazy shit! Shi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-it!

  1. @masterplan8 Doesn't work that way. You make a claim, you provide evidence for that claim. You don't get to wave it off or tell someone to prove you wrong. If that's your style of argument, then rational people can't debate you. You don't agree to abide by the same rules of logic and reason that they do.

  2. @masterplan8 Flying? Yep, science. Light bulb? Yep, science. Round world? Yep, science. Humans using fire? Wheel? Electricity? It's all science. Inventing is science. "Working stuff out" is science. Science isn't some textbook, it's noticing something worked well last time and trying it again. For better science, you write down what worked so you can try to make it better next time, and ask other people what they think. It's working out how to harness the natural world.

  3. @masterplan8 Oh and our life expectancy just jumped to the highest it has ever been in human history. Your argument is a big old bucket of fail.

  4. Hey, I want to thank everyone for their kind comments about my little song. I appreciate all of the complements.

  5. Today I woke up with an overwhelming sense of gratitude to my middle school science teacher, who on the first day of 6th grade told us that "God did it" was not an acceptable answer in his class. For no particularly reason- I haven't thought about the guy in years. I think, if he's still alive, he'd like this video quite a bit.

  6. If you haven't seen and/or heard Tim Minchin's "Storm," you should check it out. 9 minutes of comedic perfection that covers almost all of your points in a "beat" poem. Hilarious. (The video appears to have been removed from youtube, but an audio track with text is still up there.)

  7. Great stuff! The meshing of funny with science and rationality make this simply a gem. I have downloaded it and will soon be sharing it with others. Next step is to get your lyrics down on paper, grab my guitar and work on getting this thing down. Will make for a very fun song around the campfire this summer. Many thanks Eddie. Look forward to much more from you in the very near future.

  8. Very funny, and just how I feel too, sometimes. It can be very lonely up here on my high horse 😉 Great, uplifting ending BTW! I'll definitely be sharing this. Looking forward to more of your work. Congratulations.

  9. @folboteur Seen it. Love it. I'm a big Tim Minchin fan. In fact, every time I considered 'softening' some of my lyrics, I would ask myself, "what would Tim do?' and I'd leave them the way they are!

  10. Cute song. A couple things… The appeal to 'common sense' at the beginning is unwise IMHO. And I wonder how Eddie approached his friends Dave and Tina. Did he act like 'a jerk,' or with understanding and compassion about their having been scared about autism by Jenny McBimbo? The skepticism works better when the audience is not already around the bend (like Thomas), and when the skeptic employs some empathy along with scientific evidence.

  11. @mikenlynn Thanks. And if you're really interested in the lyrics, they're posted on my blog at theskepticintheroom.blogspot.com.

  12. This is great! I'm going to share it at "Show and Tell" with my Freethinkers group. (Yes, we really do have "Show and Tell." It's for us to display the fact that People Really Do Believe Some Crazy Shit.)

  13. Thanks much Eddie for the heads-up about putting the lyrics on your website. Makes it so much easier. Now, on to the guitar to work on the music part. This is going to be a lot of fun!

  14. Superb. Very well done. A little way in I was thinking this is like Tim Minchin but it won't be as good, but, I dunno, I think you're up there with him with this one mate.

  15. @oldeubank Thank you, that is high praise indeed! Now if I could only grow a head of hair like Tim's, I'd be truly happy.

  16. Ed is a gifted lyricist. The style reminds me of The Kingston Trio. If folk music ever makes a comeback, Eddie is money.

  17. Pst hey you there, check out the rest of the channel its just as good!

But yes, this song is my favorite of the four…

  18. @LogicandDreams I'm willing to put an mp3 out there for people to download; just not sure how you do that.

  19. @EddieScott1957 Well I am not the person to ask but I'm sure someone here (or a Google search) can illuminate you.

  20. @LogicandDreams Good point. So, yeah, turns out it's not that tough. The file's now downloadable at my blog: TheSkepticInTheRoom.blogspot.com.

  21. the other night some guy posted a quantum woowoo vid on a friends facebook page, when i made the quote 'people who think they understand quantum mechanics… don't" (a quote from a man who's work is often deliberately misrepresented by the Q-woowoo crowd) i was called all sorts of names, accused of being a negative, suppressive person, who just wants to make himself feel superior to other with big words. then my carefully, respectfully worded rebuttals were deleted. this song strikes a chord.

  22. Thumbs up if u watch this video whenever you want to refresh your mind after arguing with your woo woo believer friend!

  23. October 22nd : The Rapture's supposed to have happened. Harold Camping has tried this before, in the mid-90's. You think people would have looked him up on Wikipedia and refused to believe his idiocy. One things for sure – the world may as well have ended yesterday for all his deluded followers.

  24. Nice song. BTW, I spent most of my life trying to make sense out of the world and human beings by embracing science and trying to get a firm grip on reality and truth. I wanted to be a paranormal investigator and even had subscriptions to Skeptical Inquirer, but had to cancel it. You see, I see auras. I get extra information from people I can see. I used to wake up by bouncing up and down on my bed somehow. I've been abducted by greys with my brother and have seen a UFO with my friend.

  25. @JimtheHermit1
I've had intense synchronicity for several years where impossible things happened to me almost daily. And when I finally learned of The Law of Attraction and the Indigo children, every single weird thing about me made sense.

  26. @JimtheHermit1 I am 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999% certain I am a first wave volunteer soul that used to be an extra-terrestial in my last life. Because that's what I've always felt and found there are others like me- who feel the same as me. It too 41 years of searching but I've finally found people like me.

  27. @JimtheHermit1 I sorry that you don't have the tools and experiences to believe what I say. It is my nature to share what I know and teach. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you do or not. I just wish you guys were actually "skeptical" of the paranormal. But, it's obvious that you are quite convinced there are no paranormal things out there and refuse to examine the claims.

  28. @alelp lol! You can say that to someone you've never met. And something tells me I'm not the first person you said that to; it sounds awfully familiar. You know, repeating things you've heard like a parrot is not the same as thinking for yourself.

BTW, I would rather have a "weak" mind, as you call it, than an impenetrable wall for one.

  29. @JimTheHermit1 People have examined the claims. They have always been found wanting. August Derleth stories (Eric Lang – heard of him?) are not real. Tom Slemen is a liar, who put television news in a story set between the wars (back when he was pretending to be a researcher). The ones that are real, can actually be worse from a skeptical standpoint. One story about three children who vanished on a farmer's field for 4 days – The farmer was a convicted paedo. put 2 and 2 together.

  30. Sorry about your Grandma. That sucks. But vaccination is not discredited because somebody somewhere has a bad reaction to some vaccine. Tell that to the hundreds of thousands who have been spared the suffering from polio, whooping cough, measles, etc.

  31. Sorry to hear about your relatives. Yet, what happened to them is a known risk with vaccines. I've had a bad reaction to a vaccine myself, even got to hospital for it. Yet, It's nothing compared to the suffering, lifelong disability and death that's ALWAYS behind the corner, just waiting to bite that unprotected kid. Most infectious diseases are still out there!

  32. About vaccines: I'm sorry too about your grandmother, but vaccines helped eradicate small pox, polio and even reduce the cases of some kinds of cancers. They literally saved hundreds of millions of lives since they were invented in the late 18th century. About auras: they don't exist. Reading brainwaves is done using EEG or MRI that read electrical activity, not optical cameras.

  33. You sure believe in some odd ways of spelling… seriously, a video advocating skepticism with spelling errors a 2nd grader would catch?

  34. Don't know why but that last part with the couple listening to the about the vaccine advice chokes me up a bit.

  35. 6:42

"don’t take health advice from one to whom you used to masturbate,
you should get a good assist – from a working scientist!"

what if i used to masturbate to a working scientist?

  36. Then you are clearly a person of sophistication and intelligence – which means you would definitely be vaccinating your kids!

  37. Awesome tunes!
Fun, singable, but I can't find the lyrics on the blog site. Can you give a specific page within that blog, or post the lyrics below the video? I'd love to add this one to our car-trip sing-a-longs. Thanks!

  38. Yeah, I know. Every now and then I'd repost the lyrics, but then they'd get buried by other entires. Anyway, took your suggestion and the lyrics are now posted in the description.
And thanks for the kind words.

  39. Chapter 5 had me worried. I really was not looking forward to hearing about the horrible death of young and innocent children. I am glad it worked out the way it did.

Being the skeptic does have its drawbacks, but at least you always know it is darn hard to get one past you. I went to a Chiropractor when I was crippled from a back issue. He started talking about energy and whatnot. I shock his hand and said have a good day, went to a real doctor, and after a surgery, I am walking just fine.

  40. "The Force is an energy field that surrounds all living things," I once saw a book called "How to use the Force," STAR WARS ISN'T REAL, but you'd think it was if you listened to Chiropracters and Reiki practitioners.

  41. Great Song, but one thing i have to mention. I saw UFOs with my own eyes! Not saying anything about Aliens, but Ufos for sure! They zig zagged as little glowing dots over us on a clear night.

  42. I have to laugh that when this was shared on Facebook your description was cropped at "You're welcome…" It makes it sound really cocky. Love it.

  43. I found this by accident. It has been shared among the atheist groups I belong to on facebook.

    Love this song.

  44. Awesome song.  Needs one more verse though on being skeptical of government solutions.  That should just about ensure alienation of everyone. 🙂 Thanks and keep spreading the good skeptical word.

  45. I know this feeling too well. I know people who are into woo things, have a friend who thinks he saw an alien, too many people around me still give hope to homeopathy and other bullshit methods. Creationists are not so hardcore in Czech Republic, but still I would know about one or two really orthodox. And that vacctination thing… Yes, this is very hardcore here. And they hate when I say that their beliefs are not important for, well… Anything that depends purely on physical laws…

  46. I hated having to tell my brother, who thought he was attacked by demons, that maybe he was probably just high. he denied it, but c'mon!

  47. I have been in the medical field for 40 years and have seen it all. Thank you so so much for BEING The skeptic in the Room !!!!!!!!!!! It matters !!!!!!1

  48. Please enable community-contributed subtitles for the video.
That will help people to make the great song understandable for others, who do not speak English

  49. Thanks Pete Bell for showing me this. Many thanks Eddie. I'm a palliative care nurse and it never ceases to amaze me that I know doctors and nurses who believe some of this ''scary shit''. Especially when science forms the basis of medicine ffs lol And don't get me started that the complimentary therapists where I work get paid more than the nurses and health care assistants!!!

  50. I have to go there; M-theory (that's Memberane Theory- keyword: quantum physics). That's my theory for how Auras could possibly exist…but don't stop being sceptical about everything! PLease! We need to get past all this right and wrong shite and start looking at the spectrums of complementary natures.

  51. that part of not vaccinating reminded me of a guy dad at a former job. He talking about it and how he was not gonna vaccinate his daughter. I didn't say anything. I just couldn't believe it.

  52. This song is not about skeptics. It is about someone who is very gullible and believes everything that the mainstream media puts out.
