Three Bible Passages that Talk About Purgatory

Three Bible passages that talk about purgatory. Purgatory is one of the teachings of the Bible
that non-Catholics get the most angry about. “It’s not in the Bible,” they say, or,
“The Bible says you go straight to heaven or hell when you die.” But does it? Let’s
take a look by examining three Bible passages that support purgatory. First, let’s look at 1 Corinthians 3:13-15.
“Each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will
be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the
work which any man has built on [Jesus] survives, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work
is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through
fire.” Look closely at this passage. This passage
is talking about people are going to heaven. It says they will be saved. But first they
go through fire. That’s what we call purgatory. What does this fire do? It burns away their
works and hurts them: “if any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss.” But
it does not burn away all their works: “if any man’s work survives, he will receive
a reward.” Good works get rewarded, therefore only bad works, only sins, get burned away
in this fire. That’s the same thing as purgatory. Let’s summarize that. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15
says at least these three things: (1) at least some of the people who are going to heaven
will only be saved through fire. (2) This fire will burn away some of their works and
make them suffer. (3) But only their evil works get burned away — their good works
get rewarded in heaven. Catholics call this fire purgatory. It’s just a name for what
the Bible describes. A second Bible passage that supports purgatory
is in Malachi 3:2-3. That passage says: “But who can endure the day of his coming, and
who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap;
he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine
them like gold and silver, till they present right offerings to the Lord.” A few things to note here: (1) there is a
fire at the coming of the Lord. (2) It purifies the good people. (3) When the good people
get out of the fire, they are better than when they went in. What can we learn from
this? Well, only their evil works got punished. They didn’t need purified for their good
works but for their sins. Also, we’re not talking about hell here, because the people
in hell don’t present right offerings to the Lord. So we’ve got a fire, that isn’t
hell, at the coming of the Lord, where good people are purified so that they are better
than they were before. Catholics just call this fire purgatory. A third Bible passage that supports Purgatory
is in Zechariah 13:8-9. That passage says: “In the whole land, says the Lord, two thirds
shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive. And I will put this third
into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They
will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and
they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ” This Bible passage is also clear about Purgatory:
(1) some people in this passage go to hell — they are cut off and perish. (2) Some people
in it are going to heaven — they shall be left alive. (3) But first they go through
a fire and are purified. Catholics simply call this fire purgatory. So there you go, three Bible passages that
talk about Purgatory. What can we learn from it? First, there is a purgatory, there is
a purifying fire that some people have to go through before they get into heaven. Second,
this fire burns away the sins of people who are ultimately going to heaven. Third, this
fire hurts: the people in it are burned and suffer loss. But they are ultimately saved

  1. 3 unclear verses is not sound doctrine. Millions of unrepentant Catholics are banking their lives entirely on this doctrine.

  2. The New Testament text refers to the Day of Judgement. You’re taking it of context. The Old Testament texts are mute because they’re pre-Jesus. When Jesus told the thief on the cross beside him that today he’d be in paradise, He did NOT mean Purgatory. Purgatory is an invention of the Catholic leadership in the Middle Ages to reign in the illiterate people and raise money by issuing indulgences. Jesus paid the full ransom for our sins on the cross. You can’t pray or buy people’s way into Heaven. The ONLY way is by believing in Jesus’ true salvation.

  3. Hell is fire . U`r changing the name for which these verses are talking about from Hell to purgatory . they do not say for how long you will have to endure before u get through .

    but if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. We don't have to earn forgiveness from God, salvation is a gift, no man can earn it.Put your trust in Jesus Christ, what he did for us on the cross..Roman catholic is twisting the scripture to fit their false teaching of purgatory.

  5. Matthew 5:38-48

    "When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well….. But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly father,… So be perfect, just as your Heavenly Father is perfect."
    If faith alone saves therefore we do not have to obey these teachings of Jesus, because we have faith already and works are useless. So you can kill as you want and abortions as you like, sex all you can with as many people as you like as long as you have faith in Jesus. Alleluia!
    Once save always save. Even though you don't need to be perfect as your Heavenly Father.

  6. "Do you know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God which you are, is holy." (1 Corinthians 3:16-23)

    Those who believe "once save always save" do not believe this teaching of Jesus, because they are already save. So they can do all the evil in this world because the are already save. They can steal, hate others, preach to hate others, sex addiction and abortions, unfaithful to their spouse and violate the sacredness of marriage…..

    Who say so?

    "God will destroy that person." (1 Corinthians 3:17)

  7. Galatians 5:19-21

    "Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity,… drunkenness, orgies, things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

  8. James 4:4
    "You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."

  9. Romans 13:13 "Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy."

    It does not say just believe in Jesus as your Lord and saviour and you can do all these evil yet yet you are born again and save. Alleluia!

  10. 2 Peter 4:3 "For the time that is past for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties,"

    This is OK as long as you have faith. Alleluia!

  11. If Purgatory were real and important, don’t you think that Christ would have mentioned it at least once?! But He never does, He always only speaks of two possibilities, Heaven or hell. The broad way to destruction and the narrow way to eternal life. He doesn’t talk about an intermediate stop along the way and how to avoid it. I find the interpretation of the verses used in this video to be completely wrong and self-serving for Catholics. For example “.. as through fire” does not mean the same as “ fire”, thanks to the little word “as”, which is a comparative term. And “suffering loss” is not the same as “suffering”. I suffered the loss of my wallet, but I didn’t actually suffer. The context is important.
