Vlog: The Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman

Hi, it’s Imie here, welcome back to the Waterstones vlog. I hope you’re all doing really well. So today I’m going to talk
about a series which the latest book has just come out within the series. I think
we’re on book six… or seven. And I have been obsessed with it since I first
read it and yeah I might as well just show you the series. It is the Invisible
Library series by Genevieve Cogman. So what drew me to the series originally I
have to admit was the covers. I saw this book on the shelf and wanted to
know what it was about because I am a sucker for gold foiling and these all
kind of include that and they’re just beautiful. But then once I read the blurb,
why I really wanted to read it was the sound of the different genres within it.
So it’s got a bit of mystery, it’s got fantasy, it’s got steampunk which I had
never tried before. And it sounds like a book for book worms because it’s all
about books and a library. And yeah it’s really awesome. So the series follows a
character called Irene who is a spy for this place called The Library and
they’re in charge of collecting books to try and keep the world stable. So there
are worlds which are filled with more chaos and worlds filled with more order
and if you go too far in either direction it’s really bad for the world.
So she gets sent on a mission to a Victorian London-style place and she’s
been asked to retrieve a dangerous book. Which would be dangerous anyway but then
it’s Irene so everything goes into like madness and she’s having to deal with a
new assistant called Kai, she’s having to deal with this high-tech world, she’s having
to try and find out why this book is so important when not everyone’s telling
her the truth. So from the first book you’re thrown into this
adventure series that is a lot of fun. And it’s what I love most about this
series is that it’s just so much fun. The adventures of great, the
romances within it are also very good, and the characters you all meet are
just brilliant. From the main characters of Irene and Kai and someone
you’ll meet called Vale, to the kind of subsidiary characters
who are like Dragons, Fae, Vampires, Werewolves, you just get a whole cast that are
all hilarious and have their role to play. And a lot of bookish references too,
which I always love. And I think it’s just unlike anything I’d read before and
I didn’t take it seriously which was also quite fun. It’s one that if you
need a break from very heavy books, this series is just so much fun you’ll enjoy
it. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you will get angry, you’ll swoon at the romances. It’s just an absolutely wonderful series and
we’re now onto the latest one, The Secret Chapter. And I guess in theory you could
read them separately. I wouldn’t recommend it because you might not get
everything but they are all individual kind of adventures so you could in
theory. But this one has got a bit of Six of Crows vibe to it,
it’s a magical heist which is just brilliant. And the characters within it
are just hilarious. And it’s a team of unlikely people coming together to
try and steal some artwork which, yeah, it’s quite fun, it’s very fun. And Irene
and Kai are very much in their element and having to try and also fit
with these other people who they don’t normally work with and it’s just a
lot of fun. A lot of secrets and yeah I really recommend this series. This series
is just, as I said, so much fun and will look beautiful on your bookshelf because
look at them, look at the foiling, so much foiling! So yeah I would definitely
recommend if you’re looking for something fun, light, adventure-y to read,
then this one would definitely be one to pick up. It’s just full of magic and
adventure and everything you want in a book basically, it’s just so much fun and
we all need fun. And dare I say it’d be a good Christmas present. Is it too soon to
say that? I don’t think so, it’s now November, we need to think about it.
So yeah I would definitely recommend them all and I look forward to seeing
you guys again soon.
