Warwickshire Libraries are moving with the
times, and making the most of new technology. We want to make using the Library & Information
Service easier, quicker, more satisfying – and more fun. That’s why we are introducing
automated self-service check-outs in several libraries over the coming months. They work
in much the same way as the ones you see in supermarkets but, dare we say, they are quicker
and easier to use – and make short work of borrowing or returning books and other loan
items. We say ‘self-service’ – but library staff will always be on hand to help. Queues will be a thing of the past. Traditional
counters will be removed, creating more space for displaying books, browsing and relaxing
– and for library events. Instead of staff working behind the desk, they will have more
time to spend around the library helping customers find what they want. The self-service machines really are very
easy to use and can process several books or other items at once.
Say you want to take some books out: Touch the on-screen button for borrowing
…. Hold your card to the viewer, barcode side
up …. And then place your books in the opening….
They will appear as a list on screen, with a return-by date….press finish
That’s it. Decide whether you want a receipt or not
Receipts show all the items you currently have out on loan and the due dates for each
one. Returning borrowed items is just as simple
– and you don’t even need your library card: Touch the on-screen button for returning….
Place your pile of items to return in the opening….
The machine will scan them and display a list ….press finish
Again, you can finish with or without a receipt…. Finally, place your returns on the trolley
or in the book bin …. As indicated by the arrow on screen, press
finish and you’re done Anything to pay? Well that’s quick & easy
too: Press pay and hold your card to the viewer,
the value of any outstanding fees will be shown, which you can pay using the money slots!
Want to renew some items? It’s the same again, except this time you
touch the renew button…. Then show the machine your card….
A list of items on loan will appear on screen Select just the items you wish to renew or select ‘all’, press renew and take a receipt
if you want one You can also borrow items straight from the
returns trolley! Select your items and borrow as shown before So the new self-service check-outs will mean
no more counters or queues, and will give you more privacy as you borrow and return
books, CDs and DVDs. They are really quick and easy to use – but remember – staff will
always be around if you need help. You will still be able to borrow any item
from any Warwickshire library with your card, whether the library you use has self-service
or not and it’s the same for returns or renewals. Finally, the self-service check-outs offer
several language options – giving many more visitors instant, touch-button access to Warwickshire
Library & Information Service, making it quicker and more fun and staff will be able to deliver
more activities, promote books and be available to answer enquiries.
