What Is Spirituality? | Spiritual Quest | KrsnaKnows

Today we are doing a topic called “What
is Spirituality?” Now these questions have been consistently
asked to me by my disciples and devotees, and even by an average human being, “What
is this Spirituality about?” If you go to Google or you go to Wikipedia
you will get varied meanings and if you Google it, you get more than thousands of different
different meanings of the word Spirituality. Let me tell you what Spirituality means from
our perspective. Spiritually is a word derived from a word
from Sanskrit, which is called Adhyatma. Adhyatma is a story about the Soul, or who
you are. So, Spirituality intern may not mean anything
associated with any other object, except trying to find your Spirit. This is a Spirit which is there even in the
Bible, where a person says, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit.” So, Spirit is the defining factor over here,
trying to get to the base of it, we will learn that it has nothing to do with the bodies
or any other external factor. So, is Spirituality a subject which can be
studied by anybody? Of course, it can be studied by anybody. Anybody who is interested may have a belief
in a God, may not have a believe in a God, he may be from a particular religion, cast,
creed. It really doesn’t matter. You may be from any country in this world. You may be from any sect that is defined. Spirituality at the end of the day is just
knowing your Spirit. Now, Spirituality defines the word Spirit
or rather Spirit defines Spirituality. So if I have to put it in a different manner,
why is it that we get, we associate Spirituality with our normal world? It is because the bodies, there are three
bodies for that matter. The first is called the gross body the one
which you see, feel, touch—the one that you can see. The second one is called the subtle body. So the subtle body is something which you
cannot touch or feel. And the third one is called the causal body. Now if I have to see the gross body, the gross
body consists of different senses, sense organs, so on and so forth. It has its liver, lung, heart, so on and so
forth. You have a brain also. Then if I move to the subtle body, the subtle
body consists of the mind body. See the mind is something which you can not
understand otherwise also. Where is the mind? Nobody has any idea, everyone points out over
here. (pointing to head)
It is the central processing unit, it is not a mind. Mind is a sheath, a sheath, a covering and
this covering is from top to bottom. So let us not confine the mind only to the
brain. The brain is a central processing unit, along
with the spinal cord and so on and so forth. I don’t want to confuse you right now with
where the mind is, so let us move ahead. Then we have the intelligent body, or the
intellectual body. This body along with the mind is what is called
as a subtle body. Beyond the subtle body we have a causal body,
which we otherwise would describe as a happy place where anybody would like to go. It is called Anandamaya kosha in sanskrit. So now let us see, where does Spirituality
come into the picture? Spirituality has nothing to do with these
three bodies. It has nothing to do with these five sheaths. They are just a covering. Spirituality is beyond, the Spirit is beyond
these five sheaths or the three bodies. And the study of that, is Spirituality. If I want to learn who I am, where did I come
from, that is what we will teach me about Spirituality. So, you may ask a question, “How do I become
Spiritual?” Well of course anybody can become Spiritual. There is no need for you to take up a course
or to take up any subject from a particular institute or try to learn it from some books
or whatever. It’s not necessary. You can become Spiritual otherwise also, you
are Spiritual. “Why?” Because you are the Spirit. The Spirit is the one which runs your system,
isn’t it. It’s the thing which is the foundation,
which is the basis. One more important thing which I have to tell
you, the Spirit is in no way concerned with your other sheaths. The five sheets that I discussed about, it’s
not concerned with the sheaths. It is just like a witness, it witnesses everything
that is happening in you, in this body. So this is the place where we can become Spiritual. If you want to learn about this Spirituality
as a subject, you can be Spiritual and you need not be religious. Religion is a different subject all together,
which I will not discuss here. Now, what are the means of trying to become
Spiritual? Let us say if I have to become Spiritual there
definitely has to be someplace that I have to go to, “Where do I learn?” I learn it from the books. Some ancient Seers, Sages have written some
kind of a text, where we can go and study. Sometimes we call them religious texts. Sometimes we call them Spiritual texts. It really again does not matter, you can go
and read them. The second one is called the activities that
are required to be done. I’m sure everybody knows what is meditation,
everybody “meditates on the subject.” Then, we have heard about yoga. Now yoga is an activity which I think has
been proliferated right around the world. Everybody joins yoga classes. Yes, of course you have to join the yoga class,
you have to do all kinds of, you know, body exercises. But the real way, the real path of trying
to understand Spirituality is through a Spiritual Master. A Master is otherwise call the Guru. “Who is the Guru?” The term Guru simply translates into “one
who removes the darkness.” Now you may say there is no darkness. The darkness is equal to ignorance. Every human being is full of ignorance, he
is covered by what is called sheaths and layers and layers of ignorance. So you have to remove this ignorance and that
is the reason why He is required. The Guru is called the remover of darkness
or He’s the one who removes ignorance. So He’s the person who is going to guide
you along the path. Here I am going to give you an example. The example is climbing Mount Everest. How many of you have climbed Mount Everest? Hardly a few, you can count them on the fingertips. Now you would want to climb Mount Everest,
and when you climb Mount Everest you definitely require training, isn’t it? You require training and you require to acclimatize,
you require equipments, you require a guide, all these things are required. Now can you climb up that entire mountain
without a guide? I don’t think it is possible, you are anyway
going to get lost. So the guide is required. Now how many pathways are there? I think to climb Himalaya there must be multiple
pathways. You can climb from which ever face that you
want. I really have no clue about how mountain climbing
is done, but this was an example to set you on the path of Spirituality. There may be multiple pathways, sometimes
it maybe from Nepal, sometimes it is from India, China, every other path can be covered. The idea is to reach the Mount Everest, for
which you require so many things. One is training, right? Finally the last one was called the guide. The guide is necessary and “What does the
guide do?” The guide takes number of times, people from
down below to up on top. And he comes back again and does the same
thing over and over again. So there are different people who want to
reach over there. So imagine, as if, the word Spiritual or Spirituality
means trying to reach the top, trying to understand how to go there. “What happens when you reach the top?” Well you have reached the top. Do you really think that you have done something
by reaching the top? What exactly are you going to go and see? Now this is a topic which I will leave you
for another day. So right now, I think I have given you a fair
understanding of the word Spiritual. Spiritual is trying to know the Spirit within. So we have five sheaths, three bodies and
the Spirit is beyond these three bodies, beyond the five sheaths, and that — is Spirit. And to know the Spirit is to understand the
intricate idea about how to reach there you require a Guru. So I leave you over here and I will see you
all next time with another video. But, meanwhile you can send your comments
down below and ask the questions that you think are relevant for future referencing. So if I have to take up a video the next time
explaining some topic, please write down in the comment section. Thank you.
